Parents & Family Weekend 2007 Schedule

Information and Event Descriptions

 

Ticket Pick Up: Tickets will be available for pick-up by your son/daughter on Tuesday, October 23 through Friday, October 26 from 8:30am until 4:30 pm in Solon Campus Center Room 60. Tickets not picked up at that time will be available Friday until 6:00 pm at Solon Campus Center room 60 or on Saturday morning at the Resource Fair/ Continental Brunch in Kirby Ballroom.

Parking: During Parents and Family Weekend, parking is available in Pay Lot G and all maroon lots are free after 6:00 pm on Friday and all day on Saturday and Sunday; no overnight parking is allowed. Overnight parking is allowed at any of the meters, as meters are not enforced from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 8:00 a.m. Monday. All parking in the lots surrounding the residence halls and apartments is by permit only and is enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more informaiton view a campus map on-line.

North Shore Climbing Wall
UMD's Sports and Health Center

Gain some climbing skills while you experience the thrill of viewing the world 30 feet above ground! The climbing wall is located in the lower level of the new Sports & Health fitness center.

 

12 people per hour may climb the wall Fees will be collected at the Welcome Desk at SpHC.

Shoe Rental : $1
UMD students: $3
Others: $10

Any children under 18 years of age will need a parent present to sign a liability waiver.

Vista Star Harbor Cruise
Duluth Harbor behind the DECC

See the city of Duluth and its beautiful harbor from the water. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided as well as live entertainment.

Board the Vista Star at 4:30 pm and get settled for a 5:00 departure.

Haunted Ship of Ghouls
William A. Irvin, Canal Park, Duluth

During October, the historic ore boat Williiam A. Irvin transforms itself into a floating ghost ship. Minnesota's most famous Halloween attraction is not for the fait of heart!

Purchase your tickets at the William A. Irvin Ship in Canal Park. Tours leave continously beginning at 6:00pm.

Technology at UMD: Learn about the resources on campus that will help your student succeed in today's technologically advanced world. Our Knowledge Management Center (KMC) is committed to providing your student with the best advances in techonology available. Lisa Rigoni Reeves from the KMC will help you explore ePortfolio, Graduation Planner, and more!

Parent Panel: Connect with a panel of parents who will provide you with real, honest answers about how to best support your student through the college years. Moderated by Vince Repesh, UMD Parent Coordinator, you will learn about what worked and did not work for them!

You Want to Major in WHAT?!: Learn the latest about choosing a major and career options from Sonja Olsen of UMD Career Services. Recieve tips to help your student explore internships, search the job market and land a job.

Persistence and Graduation:What Parents Can Do: Learn about the top factors affecting student graduation rates and how to recognize red flags as you coach your student through college. Presented by Susan Darge, Director of Student Affairs, College of Education and Human Service Professions.

Study Aboad: What better time to see the world than when going to school! Join the International Education Office to learn about study abroad opportunities. Hear first-hand from Carol Threinen, Senior Administive Director of UMD's International Educuation Deparmentment.

Straight Talk: Join Lauretta Perry, Chemical Health Educator at UMD, as she speaks openly and answers your questions about everything from homesickness to alcohol.

Hawk Ridge Hike
Meet outside Entrance to the Library

Join the Outdoor Program Staff on one of the most spectacular Great Lake views and marvel at the thousands of hawks, eagles, and other feathered friends as they migrate south and follow the Lake Superior shoreline.

There will be a car caravan in your own vehicles to Hawk Ridge.

Bill Shipley: A Retrospective View
Bill Shipley is a native of the region, a UMD alumnus and a dedicated Tweed volunteer who returned to Duluth after living and teaching in New York City for 35 years. This exhibition brings together his current and sensitive landscape abstractions with earlier works from throughout his career.

All exhibits are free at the Tweed Museum. Other exhibits include:

Unsoiled : Nature/Culture Themes in Clay. Guest curated by James Klueg, Professor, UMD Art & Design.

Archetypes & Armatures: Sculpture & Drawings by John V. Orth.
