Transportation FAQs

Are first-year students allowed to bring a car?

Yes, first-year students may bring a car to campus. Parking permits are available for purchase and parking is available near the residence halls. However, Duluth has an extensive transit system so it may not be necessary to have a car on campus. All UMD students may ride the bus FREE by showing the U-Card (your University ID) to the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) driver; the U-Card is good on any bus, any time and several routes start/terminate at the campus. With regard to traveling home for visits, Duluth does have a bus terminal and an airport nearby. UMD also has a "ride board" where students can make arrangements to ride share with other students headed in the same direction.

How does the city bus system work? Is the bus system free?

Thanks to a cooperative effort between UMD and the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA), UMD students, faculty and staff can ride DTA buses anytime, anywhere throughout the Twin Ports, FREE of charge during Fall Semester 2003 and Spring Semester 2006 with their UMD PHOTO I.D.

With more students enrolled this year and less convenient parking on campus (due to new UMD construction), riding the DTA is a smart choice. No fees. No parking hassles. Just FREE citywide DTA bus service to and from the UMD campus or anywhere in the Twin Ports with the UMD PHOTO I.D.
Information about the U-Pass, a free bus program for University students, can be found at the Duluth Transit Authority web site.
